Newest, Nicest Mall in Guatemala City – Oakland Mall

Newest, Nicest Mall in Guatemala City - Oakland Mall

If you are in need of a North American shopping trip then head to the newest shopping mall in Guatemala City, Oakland Mall, located at 11 Avenida Diagonal 6, Zona 10.

The Oakland Mall has all the shops you would expect to see in a North American mall: North Face, Claire’s, Pizza Hut, the I Shop and more. The mall is three stories tall, has an indoor Merry-Go-Round for the kiddies, and enough kiosk stands that you will find everything you need, and everything you don’t within the Oakland Mall’s interior.

One of the nicest parts about the newest addition to the slew of malls in Guatemala City is that the bookstores at Oakland Mall contain a number of books Read more

Sushi Bar in Zona 10 Guatemala City

Having grown up in a very divesre community, I very much enjoy having a varied diet. Guatemala is not full of too great of a variety of international cuisine, unless of course you are in La Antigua Guatemala or Guatemala City.

In Guatemala City, one of the restaurants I like to dine at for a different night out is Sushi Itto, a sushi bar in Zona 10 at 4a Avenida y 14 calle.

Sushi Itto serves a good variety of sushi combos, as well as tempura, sashimi, maki, yakitori, and teppanyaki. The food is good, and uses the best ingredients available for the dishes.

Service is good, food is great – no complaints here. I always get the combo platter Read more

Authentic Mexican Food at Los Cebollines in Guatemala City

Los Cebollines is part of a small chain of Mexican eateries with a number of locations in Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Honduras.

The place is clean and serves up good, authentic Mexican food. It is a real simple restaurant and the service is slower than we expect as North Americans, but it was pretty average speed for Central America.

The price is about average for a specialty sit-down place, with a full meal being about $11–20 per person.

Visit the Los Cebollines Web site at www.cebollines.com.

The Zona 1 location  is on 6th Avenue 9–75. No reservations are needed, but the phone number is +502 2232 7750. Los Cebollines also has wireless internet.

Los Cebollines also does catering, delivery and franchising.

ONE Restaurant and Lounge

The restaurant serves up a variety of popular modern dishes and uses traditional gourmet ingredients from Guatemala and abroad. The lounge, which is connected to the restaurant is a very edgy and modern; it is unlike anything else you will find in Guatemala City.

ONE has a little bit of everything for everyone – families can eat at the restaurant, those who are there to mingle and meet other singles can chill on the lounge side.

The two different sides have different menus. At the lounge you can get more appetizer type food, as well as sushi and sashimi. At the restaurant make sure you try the cheesecake, it is delicious. My friend had the carpaccio and was thoroughly pleased. Read more

Jean Francois – French Cuisine in Guatemala City

For a night out in Guatemala City you should definitely try Jean Francois, a delightful French restaurant in Zona 10.

Jean Francois restaurant is nicely decorated, and serves delicious food. The strangest thing about it is trying to find it! It is located at the end of an unmarked corridor, in an unmarked, small shopping center. You will find it at Diagonal 6, 13–63 in Zona 10. If you absolutely can’t find it you can call 333–4785 and ask how to get there!

Many people agree that Jean Francois is one of the best restaurants in Guatemala. The steaks come highly recommended, in any of the sauces, and the desserts, the Mousses in particular, are held in high regard Read more

Live Music and Good Food at the Rainbow Cafe

The Rainbow Cafe and reading room is a popular place to eat throughout the day in La Antigua Guatemala, but it is also popular in the evenings for its live music.

Italian Food – Pizza for Americans in La Antigua

As a Gringo, upon arriving in a new city, one of the things on my list of things to do is locate the best pizza in town. As far as La Antigua goes, Quesos Y Vinos has got my vote.

Sure, it has a variety of soups, salads, and pastas, but for me, it’s the pizza hands down. There are three different sizes of pizza; the small is around 50Q while the family size is about 140Q. As if you weren’t already loading up on a mountain of delicious carbs, most meals are accompanied by Quesos Y Vinos trademark sourdough bread.

Another tasty menu item is the oven baked Italian bred smothered in melted cheeses… mmm. And for dessert make Read more

School on Vacation??? The Antigua Cooking School Perhaps?

Far from being your traditional classroom setting, the Antigua Cooking School, hosted by Militza de León, a graduate of the Intecap Guatemalan culinary school, and Vilma McComsey, proprietor of The Antigua Cooking School, is set in the walled garden of a colonial home in La Antigua, under a 130-year-old avocado tree.

Miltza and Vilma, who take turns instructing the daily classes, are far from being teachers only; they are also hostesses. They chat mindlessly with the students, who feel a bit more like guests who have been invited into the kitchen. There is no room in the kitchen, however, for idle hands, so the students pick up the dough and get to work.

Christmas is Coming… and so are Tamales Negros!

With Christmas fast approaching excitement for tamales colorados mounts. Tamales are good at any time of year, but the tamal negro is a personal favorite of mine and it seems I can only manage to get a hold of some in the month of December.

Black tamales get their name from their chocolate-based sauce and is commonly accompanied by raisins, nuts, and dried plums. It might seem a little strange at first, but the sweet taste is something that kind of just grows on you, kind of like the habichuelas con dulce served during Semana Santa.

Other tamales served in during the holiday and year-round include the tamal colorado, which is probably the most common and the smaller chuchito which Read more
