Another Obscure(ish) Holiday

Another Obscure(ish) Holiday

In case you were wondering what all the celebrations were for last night and today: it is John the Baptist Day, which in Guatemala serves to celebrate the nativity of John the Baptist.

It’s a Christian holiday in a predominantly Christian nation, making for all sorts of celebrations, traditional dances, feasting and fireworks!

ONE Restaurant and Lounge

The restaurant serves up a variety of popular modern dishes and uses traditional gourmet ingredients from Guatemala and abroad. The lounge, which is connected to the restaurant is a very edgy and modern; it is unlike anything else you will find in Guatemala City.

ONE has a little bit of everything for everyone – families can eat at the restaurant, those who are there to mingle and meet other singles can chill on the lounge side.

The two different sides have different menus. At the lounge you can get more appetizer type food, as well as sushi and sashimi. At the restaurant make sure you try the cheesecake, it is delicious. My friend had the carpaccio and was thoroughly pleased. Read more

The place isn’t your typical bar; it is decorated like an old brewery or beer company, and it can get a bit noisy, but at least it has a greater variety of beer than you will find at the local grocery store. They also Read more

Concert in Monterrico Tonight!

The Cantantes Finlandeses (a Finnish choir) will be performing tonight at 7:30 pm in Monterrico at the Misión Siloé church.

The Finnish choir is composed of 22 singers accompanied by Martin Segerstråle on the piano. The choir was put together specially for the trip to Guatemala, and is made up of Swedish-speaking singers.

The tour was designed with the thought of introducing Finnish and Swedish music to a part of the world where Finland isn’t well known. The classical music is drawn from both Finnish and Swedish backgrounds, with a particular focus given to choir music. Folk music and modern music will also have a small part in the program. Some popular songs will be played as crowd-pleasers as well. Read more

Best Food in Antigua

High quality typical Guatemalan meals are served up hot and fresh at La Escudilla in Antigua found at 4a Av Norte 4. The restaurant has a nice feel to it, with a beautiful outdoor dining area. Occasional special live musical events add to the dining experience.

La Escudilla is open for from 8 am to midnight and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prices are average for Guatemala, meaning you can get a full meal for just a couple bucks. The complete breakfast comprised of eggs, tortillas, coffee, and salad (a little strange for breakfast), costs just $1.30. Daily specials, a hearty meal, cost only two dollars!
