One of the things that really sets Guatemala apart from other countries is their dedication to preserving history. While all other Central American countries seem to be charging ahead leaving as much as they can behind, Guatemala is open to progress but unwilling to let go of the past. While indigenous groups that still speak their native tongue are small and rather uncommon in other countries, Guatemala has major indigenous groups some even as large as 1, 000, 000 people. These large groups treasure their language, culture and customs and refuse to let them die out.
It only makes sense that such a varied and culturally rich country would be home to many archeological finds that help to shed some light on ancient Mayan civilizations. A wonderful example of this is the El Mirador archeological site. Here archeologists unearthed what is possibly the largest pyramid in the world by volume. This treasure had been overrun by the rainforest surrounding it and had been kept a secret. Towering at 79 meters above the ground, this amazing structure is an impressive example of Mayan architecture. One of the most impressive aspects of this massive structure is that every stone was laid by hand. Complete with rooms dedicated to religious ceremonies this find continues to show the Mayan devotion to their deities.
The discovery of La Danta pyramid led to another amazing discovery. A plaster panel dating back to 200 BC was found near El Mirador city. The panel is an artistic depiction of the Mayan creation story Popol Vuh.
The natural beauty surrounding these marvelous archeological sites only enhances their own beauty and significance. Take the time to visit this ancient Mayan city. There are helicopter tours and mule tours available into this area. There is hope that increased tourism will continue to drive away traffickers, poachers and looters that endanger these treasures. Take an overnight tour and watch the sunrise from the top of an ancient pyramid. This adventure is not for the faint of heart but rather for those courageous enough to sleep in a hammock in the middle of the rainforest.
