Lake Atitlan should be amongst the wonders of the modern world. The pristine volcanic lake is the deepest in Central America and renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Surrounded by Atitlan, San Pedro and Toliman volcanoes, this lake is a truly unique site. Toliman and Atitlan are still active, although its been several hundred years since either has erupted.
The lake is also surrounded by many Mayan populations, most of them isolated. Reachable only by boat. Most Mayan inhabitants in the area belong to either the Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel peoples. These are ancient civilizations that have kept their language and culture alive
throughout the past centuries. Though remote and secluded the natural and cultural beauty of these communities merit a visit.
The lake itself is wonderful for diving as there are several Mayan archeological sites under water. A great option for diving is La Iguana Perdida a diving company complete with accommodations. Take a basic open water course or dive into deep waters and take in some exotic wildlife and volcanic formations. Accommodations range from $5- $54 USD. Located in Santa Cruz, La Iguana Perdida is only reachable by boat from Panajachel.
Panajachel has become a major tourist town, though lacking in charm, it is the closest town to the lake and the most easily accessible. Most hotels close to the lake are here, as well as many restaurants and a very active weekend nightlife. One such spot in Panajachel is the Crossroads Cafe owned and operated by American expats Michael and Adele Roberts. Their coffee is a blend of Guatemalan coffee and some imported coffee. Their espresso, specialty coffees and homemade pastries are simply to die for. Coffee by the pound is also available, so that you can take this delicious goodness home. Another spot is Solomon’s cafe, offering something for everyone. Free WiFi, live music, a small appetizer menu, a cinema and video store make this a strange blend that somehow works.
Lake Atitlan is full of wonder. Dive in and experience something you’ve never experienced before and will likely never experience again. Each visit to Lake Atitlan is truly unique and wonderful in its own right.
