Mercado Central – The best place to souvenir shop

One of the must-do things in Guatemala as far as I am concerned is visit the Mercado Central, or Central Market in Zona 1.

The Mercado Central is always a bustling hive of activity as locals and tourists alike mingle through the many stalls and displays in search of different crafts Mercado centraland other items.

This is a great place to purchase souvenirs; you will be able to find something for everyone on your list, guaranteed. Common items include typical woven Guatemala (Mayan) clothing, sundry wares, wooden trinkets and artifacts, pieces of art, leather items and jewelry.

Locals also buy produce and live animals here, although those items aren’t as popular among tourists… wonder why…

There are three levels, and the items for purchase are divided by level. The top level is the “tourist” section. There you can find textiles, jewelry, leather goods, and so on and so forth. The second level is where the locals get their food, and I think it is a must-see for any tourist. (They even have little food carts with typical street fare for sale… if you have a sensitive stomach, don’t buy anything!)

The third level is kind of a specialty sort of level… here you will find ceramic makers, basket makers, and other odds and ends craftsmen.

Over the years this site on Calle 8 and Av 8 in Zona 1 has served many purposes. It was originally used as the city’s first burial site! It also served as the city barracks, but was partially destroyed by earthquakes in the early 1900s. In 1976 it was rebuilt underground.

Be forewarned – the bathroom situation is a little interesting. They are located on the second level and you have to pay a quetzal to get in and they will hand you some toilet paper on your way inside. To get the toilet to flush you have to pour water from a bucket down into them… I would suggest using the bathroom before you arrive at the marketplace.

The Mercado Central is open Monday to Saturday 9 am – 6 pm and Sunday 9 am to 12:00 pm.
