The Rainbow Cafe and reading room is a popular place to eat throughout the day in La Antigua Guatemala, but it is also popular in the evenings for its live music.
Music is scheduled to start every night at 7:30 (you know how schedules go in Guatemala…)
Mondays feature Don Ramiro and classic Latin folk music. Tuesdays we have local musician Cesar who plays a mix of Western and Latino songs. Wednesdays are Open Night Mike – if you’re brave enough to take the stage you get a complimentary drink. If you are a guitar fan you’ll want to
come on Thursday to hear Guicho play. Fridays we’ve got Reggae tracks played by Sergio and Saturdays La Casa del Kello plays a mix of popular Latin and Western tunes as well as original pieces. The week ends on Sunday with La Raiz-Luis, Juan-Jo and Choko and a mix of classics.
While you’re there you’ll want to try some of the delicious eats and grab a drink or two from the well-stocked bar. I’m a particular fan of the falafel, which is served with hummus, although I would venture to guess the Mexican items on the menu are a bit more popular. Save room for dessert, as the Banoffee pie is a must try. It is a Rainbow specialty: a sweet honey biscuit base, covered in caramel and banana, topped with whipped cream and dusted with chocolate powder. Yummy!
Breakfast at the Rainbow Cafe is also good, although I still find it strange that the early bird special (served from 8–10:30 am) includes rice… when in Guatemala…
Every Tuesday night at 5:30 discussions are held on topics currently on the minds of Guatemalans and foreigners in Guatemala.
