Antigua is getting ready. Tomorrow night is New Year’s Eve and this city has certainly built up a reputation for putting on one of the most spectacular displays of fireworks. The show starts about an hour or so before midnight and fireworks can be seen from all over the city. The loud, brightly colored sky captures the imagination of all involved
in the celebration, hope for the coming year reflected in the light on their faces.
If you want to enjoy the celebration with close friends or family only, scamper up onto your rooftop. From there you can enjoy the light show above and the dancing and parading around in the streets below.
The fireworks aren’t the city’s gig; people all throughout Antigua set them off themselves, creating a 360 degree celebration. Loud music plays from various venues, enthusing everyone with its loud thumping beats.
The real party is on Calle del Arco, a common strip of concrete for pedestrian traffic. It is here where the great countdown to midnight takes place, and also serves as the nucleus of the entire celebratory town.
Since there is no regulating on fireworks in Guatemala, the streets can get pretty crazy with anyone running around with pyrotechnic play things. There are firecrackers, sparklers, and a whole host of other personal fire toys and larger fireworks.
Since New Year’s Eve in Guatemala isn’t considered the “family celebration” (thank you Christmas!) Guatemalans will spend the evening anywhere. Why not make your way over to Antigua for the festivities?
