Of those who actually chose between McCain and Obama, 27% supported Obama, while only 11% preferred McCain. Those results are consistent with the rest of the world, as Obama is preferred around the world by a ratio of nearly 4–1.

From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States.Pan6(a)

The remainder of Guatemalans, a whopping 63% weren’t sure which President would be the better choice as far as their country is concerned.

At this point, Guatemalan isn’t even sure if this election has any bearing on their country. In a nearly evenly divided vote, 32% said Guatemala would be affected by the election, 37% said it wouldn’t and 31% were unsure.

Pan6Although this poll might not reflect it, it seems the expat community in Guatemala strongly prefers Obama to McCain, which isn’t surprising seeing as many left the country due to Bush’s antics, of which they see many similarities in McCain. Support among the expat community in areas such as Antigua are strong for Obama, and many are planning on either flying to the States to cast their vote or vote from abroad. Others feel that some of Obama’s policies are out of line, and that his lack of experience points to his inability to lead the United States.

What do you think? How will Guatemala be affected by McCain in office? By Obama? Who will you be voting for on November 4th?

Of the hundreds of Americans I cross paths with weekly in Guatemala I know not one who left because of Bush, nor one who would fly to the US to vote rather than drop the ballot off at the Embassy
