If your phone is on the GSM international digital system, you will have little trouble calling home from Guatemala. The easiest and most inexpensive way to keep in touch from Guatemala via cell phone is by purchasing a prepaid SIM card from one of Guatemala’s
major cell phone providers (Claro, Movistar and Tigo). If you don’t use a local provider, you will end up paying through the nose for international roaming charges.
In order to connect your phone to the Guatemalan network using a prepaid SIM, you will need to make sure your cell phone is unlocked. If it is not, you can ask your cell service provider to do so, enabling you to use your phone with the Guatemalan network.
Another plus to the Guatemalan phone system is that incoming calls are free, no matter where they come from. In addition, since everything is done on a prepaid basis, there are no contracts to sign.
