These Arent Your Everyday School Buses

Traveling in Guatemala City and the country as a whole can be done in a number of ways. Often the best way to get around the city is by private taxi; they are safest and easiest. If you are heading out of town to another popular vacation destination you may choose to take a private shuttle. While those are all well and good, no trip to Guatemala is complete without experiencing the Chicken Bus! This aint your fathers Oldsmobile - Guatemala Chicken Buses

These vibrantly decorated Bluebird school buses perfectly represent the Guatemalan way of things. Not only are they bright and colorful, they are work-horses who start their long treks on their own terms. (Translation:  Schedules are hard to come by. Ask around and be patient. Drivers leave when they are ready, not a moment sooner.) Avoid paying the gringo tax; watch what the locals pay, and try to give exact change.

While it’s true, they may be cramped, packed to the brim with passengers and lacking air conditioning, without trying one, a journey through the Guatemalan interior would not be the same.

Gringo Tip — This ain’t your father’s Oldsmobile. Be prepared for a very different experience.
